Spirit of the Masai Mara has put together a luxurious package for our guests that includes ultimate levels of comfort in one of our ten suites, with amazing vistas of the Masai Mara, private bars, private verandas, and quality like no other. Away from the overnight stays, we offer exciting and life-changing excursions such as game drives that get you up close and personal with some of the most beautiful wildlife nature has to offer, as well as hot air ballooning and local village visits. We understand though, that all of this beauty and the luxury holidays that our guests enjoy, are only attainable due to that natural wildlife.

This is why we are committed to working in a way that is sustainable and looks at ecosystem management that does not hinder the local environment or make things worse. The last thing we would want is to have a negative impact on our surroundings. With clever ecosystem management and connections with the local Masai Mara villages, we are helping to build a brighter future.

What is Ecosystem Management?

We wanted to develop an holistic approach to ecosystem management that could work effectively within our professional setup. The idea is to help conserve the biological diversity of the local ecosystem, assist in restoring natural resources, whilst maintaining that balance that allows for life to continue functionally for current and future generations.

Our idea at Spirit of the Masai Mara is to work in cooperation with other tourism operators in the area, alongside the local communities, to form a management system that works for everyone. This includes the tourist vendors and the tourists themselves, alongside the local villages, as well as to help protect the wildlife and nature within the Masai Mara National Reserve and the Siana Conservancy. We believe in controlled grazing, zoning controls on livestock, and helping to restore natural habitats whilst being strict with anti-poaching measures.

How Else Does Our Practice Help?

On a daily basis we have shifted the way we function in certain areas. This includes how we deal with waste water management and in how we manage general waste. With the help of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Mau Mara Serengeti Sustainable Water Initiative (MaMaSe), we have installed a waste water management system that purifies water used at our lodge (we are one of only two in the Masai Mara with such a system). In terms of general waste reduction, we have brought in a process of taking any plastic bottles to a local women’s group where they are turned into traditional Masai jewellery, whilst we also have our very own composting system to fertilise the organic vegetable garden on site.
