Night Game Drives
As the Spirit of the Masai Mara is located in a private conservancy, we can offer our guests the exhilarating experience of night game drives, which is an opportunity to spot the lesser seen animals of the ecosystem, including Aardvarks and Porcupines that come out to forage long after the sun has set. Witness the nocturnal activities that go on using our red spotlight instead of a white light, which does not disturb the animals, and ensures their comfort in the natural surroundings.
Game Drive in the Masai Mara National Reserve
Upon request, we can offer game drives in the world famous Masai Mara National Reserve for guests to experience the wonder of this magnificent destination with a stunning kaleidoscope of wild and rugged landscapes, its spectacular natural diversity of wildlife, and the Maasai people that call this place home. The Mara is renowned for the great Migration, when each year this area welcomes 1.5 million wildebeests onto its savannahs from July through October, an exciting and never ending cycle of nature that unfolds at every turn, from exhilarating river crossings to action packed moments across the plains, as the predators make the most of this voracious opportunity.

Maasai Training – Traditional Skills
There is so much fun to be had learning the traditional customs of the Maasai warrior. These include building and starting a fire, spear throwing, using a bow and arrow to practice shooting a stationary target. Find out how they used a ‘rungu’ for hunting in the old days and skills required to track animals. Learn about the medicinal properties of the local plants and shrubs, including some very practical uses, such as brushing teeth! Delve into their fascinating history and hear all about their culture and what it means to be Maasai.
Manyatta building
Manyatta building is a great way for children to immerse themselves in the Maasai culture and learn how a traditional boma is made, starting with gathering the soft sticks that are intertwined to create the structure. Once this has been done, it’s time to get messy and mix the mud, using soil, grass and water, which all kids love doing! The stick structure is then covered with several layers of mud and then left to dry in the sun. The roof is last and can be made from almost anything including sticks, reeds, tin or anything that will lay flat. A fun, engaging and educational activity for all ages!
The community experience – visit a Maasai village
At The Spirit of the Masai Mara we have a deep connection with the local community and we are always looking at ways for our guests to feel like they have made a genuine connection, especially with the people that live here and make it what it is. Spirit of the Masai Mara offers excursions to the nearby Maasai village for a first-hand experience of the Maasai culture and lifestyle. Enjoy the traditional Maasai dances and jumping contests and learn from the Maasai how to make a fire and use a spear and bow and arrow. If you are lucky, you can experience the ceremonial rituals when young Maasai transition from childhood to warrior to elder. The visits to the Masai village are only arranged on special requests of our guests and at the convenience of our Maasai hosts.
